Would you like to help inspire children's awareness and enjoyment of folk music?

I recently received an email from a teacher who is trying to inspire young musicians but found that her young children had never seen a live musical performance. She was asking for some musicians to play for the children and to talk about the instruments, why they play them, how they work, etc. As schools have very restricted budgets these days she was hoping for some volunteers.

Myself and some friends have volunteered to play for her and it has prompted me to wonder how many folk musicians there are in and around Oxford who would be interested and available during the school day to do something similar either individually or as part of ad hoc ensembles and if it would be possible to compile a register of volunteer musicians that could be made available for schools to contact.

If you would be interested in helping inspire school children in this way then please let me know by email to admin(AT)folkinoxford.co.uk and if there is sufficient interest I can take steps to set this up.

We have a very active programme from early Spring to late Autumn plus various regular events around Christmas each year.  We produce a printed programme early each year and also make the pdf version available by downloading from the web-site. You can sign up for an occasional news update on our web-site. There is a live feed of the latest events on our home page and a full list of all public events is available there too.

Of course these are only our public performances - if you want to join us you will find we do a lot more unconventional things in private!  If you want to hire us for a public or private event the contact details are on our web-site too.

Dance displays

Dance sides will often perform out in public - mostly during the summer months, but sometimes around Winter Solstice, Boxing Day and New Year as well. Look out for all different types of Morris dance, as well as rapper (with flexible swords), Irish dance, and Playford style display teams. Information about where to see the performances will be added to this page as it becomes available; keep checking back!
