The North Wall - Martin Green: The Portal - April 17 - 19th

Find yourself right in the middle of an immersive world, from ancient rite to banging club.

What has changed in 4,000 years of dance culture?

It’s May Day 1988, the Second Summer of Love. Martin Green (fearless inventor and accordion player in esteemed folk trio Lau)  is nine years old and morris dancing at dawn while the ravers are still going in the next field.

What’s the difference? What’s the same?

Martin Green leads us through a mind-altering, bespoke audience experience that asks if trance state is actually part of the culture of these islands – have we forgotten it? Or denied it? Pass through The Portal and you will become part of this beautiful and exhilarating world of music, movement and ritual.

There ain’t no party like an experimental morris dance theatrical rave party.

Co-commissioned by OCM and the North Wall Arts Centre and Southbank Centre

JON BODEN – SOLO TOUR

Thursday 5th March. Cornerstone Arts, 25 Station Rd. Didcot, Oxfordshire. OX11 7NE.  Doors: 20:00  Tickets: £20.00(adv) £22(doors).  Box Office: 01235 515144

The audience can expect to hear songs from Bellowhead along with new (perhaps more contemporary) songs from both “Afterglow” and Jon’s latest album “Rose in June”.

Jon Boden has become the, ‘stand out performer of his generation’ (The Guardian) of traditional folk artists, but one whose repertoire extends far beyond the boundaries of the genre.

Best known as the lead singer and main arranger of the progressive folk juggernaut Bellowhead,  after twelve years, a quarter of a million album sales, seven singles on the Radio 2 playlist and selling out hundreds of venues throughout the land and beyond, including notably the Royal Albert Hall, Jon announced in 2015 that he wanted to move on.  Since then Jon has been touring successfully with his solo show, his band The Remnant Kings and a scaled down version, The Remnant Strings.

Widely respected as an interpreter of traditional song and songwriter, the solo shows also showcase Jon’s instrumental talents on fiddle, guitar and concertina, as well as his trademark stomp box, which he and John Spiers introduced into to the world of traditional music in 2001.  Through his solo work, his work with Bellowhead and with Spiers & Boden, Jon has amassed eleven BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

In November 2019 Jon released his 4th solo album, Rose In June to exceptional reviews.  Rose In June captures Boden’s inimitable folk storytelling backed by The Remnant Kings having perfected the material during extensive touring in the previous months. The resulting album finds both Boden and band at the top of their game.

‘Rose In June perfectly captures the polished arrangements of songs experienced live by Jon Boden fans.’ 5/5 Spiral Earth

‘Rose In June is a majestic album.’ FATEA

‘Boden’s powers of storytelling [are] undimmed’ Bright Young Folk

‘A stand-alone work that ranks among the most accomplished, passionate and polished of his releases to date.’ Folk Radio UK

Album of the Year 2019 nomination FATEA (winner announced 10th Jan)

Reviews of the live solo shows:

Alone, Boden still has the energy of a twelve piece band’ EDS Magazine

‘Boden plays a vast variety of instruments as we veer from mysterious love songs to dark, poetic tales, amid hints of soul, electronic and thrilling guitar thrash’ Mojo ****

‘Nothing seemed too far for Boden – whether it was singing accompanied merely by handclaps, or performing a cover of Whitney Houston’s 80s hit I Wanna Dance With Somebody…the music electrified the audience and held the room in silence.’ Cherwell (Oxford University’s student publication)
