Oxfolk Christmas Ceilidh with The Ship Band Sat 14th Dec

Christmas Mexiceilidh with The Ship Band
with caller Hannah Bright and morris spot from Cry Havoc

The Ship Band presents a Mexican Christmas party! Bring your sombreros, Zorro masks, cactus-suits and mariachi bands to celebrate in style. They play a mix of original and contemporary Irish, Scottish and English music with a bit of twist. The band’s members are regulars at festivals across the country and are well-known for their frenetic, high-energy tune sets. You will have seen them at Folk Weekend Oxford and Sidmouth FolkWeek. Hannah Bright, an expert Mexiceilidh caller, will be making sure that we all dance our socks off!

Cry Havoc, Botley's morris side, is 20 years old this year! We are delighted that they are rounding off their anniversary celebrations at Oxfolk and dancing for you at half-time.

Oxfolk Ceilidh with Liam Robinson Dance Band Sat 9th Nov

Liam Robinson Dance Band - Sat 9th November, 7.30pm for 8pm
including caller Liam Robinson and speed shanty spot from Short Drag Roger

The Liam Robinson Dance Band is a relatively new band which has been making a big impression. Liam Robinson, a melodeon player and caller, leads the trio with Tim Walker on brass and percussion and Nina Zagorski on piano. The band is resident at Lincoln Ceilidhs and has also been seen recently at Towersey Festival and Cecil Sharp House, as well as touring Finland, Estonia and Germany. At the heart of their success is a refreshing and utterly danceable approach to ceilidh music.

The fantastic Short Drag Roger join us to give us a blast of speed sea shanties during the interval.  How many can they sing in 10 minutes?  Come and find out!

Oxfolk Ceilidh with English String Band Sat 12th Oct

Oxfolk Ceilidh with English - Sat 12th Oct, 7.30pm for 8pm

with caller Sheena Masson
and song spot from Toby Goss

The massed fiddles of all sizes of the English String Band play the most splendid dance music and if you have not yet had the chance to dance to lots of violins with cello and double bass, this is a dancing opportunity you cannot afford to pass up. The band members’ pedigrees are impressive and they are steeped in traditional music from all over England. These players of small and big fiddles are, or have been, members of some of the most influential English dance bands of the last 30 years, including: the Old Swan Band, New Victory Band, Old Hat Band, Katie’s Quartet, Our Northern Branch, Grand Union and English Country Dance Band.

The wonderful Sheena Masson joins the band tonight to explain and call the dances.  Interval entertainment this month is from Toby Goss – a fine, locally-based singer and member of Eynsham Morris.

There is a licensed bar selling top quality real ale from Old Forge Brewery, real cider, wines and soft drinks. Doors open at 7.30pm for the ceilidh which starts 8pm. Oxfolk Ceilidh with Token Women Sat 11th May

Oxfolk Ceilidh with Token Women - Sat 11th May, 7.30pm for 8pm

with callers Jo Freya, Fi Fraser, Jackie Allen and guest Penny Burton
and spot from Oxford University Morris Men

To close the season we have the legendary Token Women. The band's exuberant, jazzy and utterly infectious sound is a favourite with ceilidh dancers. They boast a driving fiddle, keyboard and percussion section topped by brass. The tunes are sometimes traditional, sometimes written by members of the band, but always coming out of a deep knowledge of European dance traditions. The band is made up of Jackie Allen - fiddle/sax; Alice Kinloch - tuba/trombone/euphonium; Fi Fraser - fiddles/clarinet; Jo Freya - saxes/clarinets/whistles; Jo May - percussion; Heather Horsley - keyboard. The only conundrum is exactly how does Alison Kinloch play fast reels on a tuba ... come and find out!

Penny Burton is this season's final Calling Academy caller. She calls for the Unreel Ceilidh Band and will be guesting with the rest of the calling shared between Jo Freya, Fi Fraser and Jackie Allen, Token Women's regular callers.

Oxford University Morris Men is one of the oldest of modern, revival morris sides, founded in 1926. We look forward to their spot at half-time!

Oxfolk

Oxfolk is a long-running ceilidh series that is currently based in Kennington Village Hall, just outside the Oxford ring road and a few minutes from the A34. Dances run from October to May on the second Saturday of the month, although the April dance is usually run in conjunction with Folk Weekend: Oxford, so doesn't follow the normal pattern.
