Oxfolk

Oxfolk Ceilidhs Sat 12th Dec - Threepenny Bit + Phill Moxley + Short Drag Roger

Threepenny Bit

Oxfolk's Christmas party is with Threepenny Bit. This dynamic eight-piece band combines a group of die-hard folkies with some of the finest young jazz and classical musicians of the south. They play bold arrangements of traditional and original tunes with infectious stage energy. They have quickly become favourites on the festival circuits and were a hit at Folk Weekend Oxford this year, packing out the Saturday night ceilidh. Their last gig in Oxford sold out! We can't wait to dance to them again.

Phill Moxley is the big man with the ceilidh moves. He appeared last season with Barry Goodman and we can't wait to have him back.

Short Drag Roger is back to give us a wintery blast of shaties during the interval. What more could you want? It's quite the best party you find!

Oxfolk Ceilidhs Sat 14th Nov - Random + Gordon Potts + Sharp & Blunt

Random is 15 this year! This is classic folk rock ceilidh music at its best and we're lucky enough to host the last ceilidh of their anniversary year. The Random men in black are Saul Rose on melodeon, Paul Nye on melodeon and harmonica, Keith Holloway on bass guitar, Ian Woledge on rhythm guitar, Roger Smith on drums and Maclaine Colston on hammered dulcimer. Here's to the next 15!

We are delighted to have caller Gordon Potts with us to call all the right dances in just the right way.

We are just as happy to have Sharp and Blunt, Adderbury's wonderful women's morris side to entertain us during the interval.

There is a licensed bar serving real ales, cider, wine and soft drinks.

Tickets on the door: £10 adults, £7 concessions (12-18, students, OAPs). See our website www.oxfolk.org.uk for details of family and group discounts.

Oxfolk Ceilidhs Sat 10th Oct - Jigfoot + Mike Courthold + Simon + Jo Harmer

Jigfoot with Simon and Jo Harmer

Jigfoot is bursting with vitality, playing tunes with swooping melodies and a swing that will keep you dancing all night! The Southampton-based band specialises in playing traditional tunes from Hampshire and the surrounding area. The line-up features Nic Bradford - guitar, Ben Potton - fiddle, Gill Redmond - cello, Kim Sheil - melodeon and Cath Watkins - fiddle.

"Southampton-based purveyors of English dance music strut their stuff with exuberant bounce, swing and syncopation" fRoots

This evening's caller is Mike Courthold, whose vast repertoire of dances and easy-going manner, makes him a favourite with very many dancers.

Simon and Jo Harmer have worked with Jigfoot to develop their excellent performances of southern step dancing, and we are lucky to be entertained by them at half-time this evening.

Oxfolk Ceilidhs Sat 9th May - Haddo + Jo Freya + Rising Voices

Haddo - Will Pound + Nicky Grant

We can't quite believe that this is our last ceilidh before the summer break, and what a note to finish on! Look forward to rich, exotic and unexpected sounds from Haddo, the viola/fiddle and melodeon duo. The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards nominated musician Will Pound is best known his harmonica playing, but with Haddo he plays jazzy, gutsy melodeon, alongside Nicky Grant, viola and fiddle player with a folk and baroque background. You can look forward to their intense and exciting music, with driving tunes and unexpected harmonic twists.

As well for her exquisite musicianship, Jo Freya is known for her calling with Blowzabella and Token Women. With her great collection of dances, and her warm on stage wit, Jo will make this evening a very memorable one.

To round off this season, Risinghurst’s own community choir, Rising Voices, will entertain us with rousing choruses and touching harmonies.

Oxfolk

Oxfolk is a long-running ceilidh series that is currently based in Kennington Village Hall, just outside the Oxford ring road and a few minutes from the A34. Dances run from October to May on the second Saturday of the month, although the April dance is usually run in conjunction with Folk Weekend: Oxford, so doesn't follow the normal pattern.
