A group of locals have formed the charitable trust Make Music Abingdon and set out to arrange a Make Music Day/Fête de la Musique in Abingdon on Friday June 21st 2019. It is an international concept with events taking place worldwide on solstice day with the purpose of celebrating music and getting lots of people to make music.
(UK website: https://makemusicday.co.uk/. One of the charities behind it is Music for All.)
Different from other music events in Abingdon is the communal aspect of it, involving as many people as possible in actively making music during the day and thereby making new connections locally.
We are hoping to fill Abingdon with music on the day, starting about 3pm, via workshops, sessions and performances in and around the Market Place. There will be a range of workshops like song writing, choir, ukulele, sing-and-dance, fiddle as well as open folk sessions, and some of the finest musicians and choirs of Abingdon and its surroundings will perform in the Market Place and in local venues later in the evening.
One of the key principles behind Make Music Day is that is must be free to attend to make it accessible to as many as possible in the community. There will be no income as we will leave the sale of drinks and food to pubs, cafés and restaurants in town.
